Launch of new shariah-compliant insurance products welcomed

The launch of new shariah-compliant insurance offerings has been welcomed by one organisation.

Last year, Salaam Halal insurance began offering both Muslims and non-Muslims the opportunity to purchase cover products which are consistent with Islamic teachings.

Now, the firm has introduced shariah-compliant home insurance as well.

Responding to the development, moneysupermarket.com said it was "encouraging".

The price comparison site added: "Prior to Salaam Halal insurance's launch in July 2008, British Muslims didn't have the option of buying insurance products aligned with their faith."

It went on to suggest that Salaam Halal insurance will also appeal to non-Muslims who are seeking competitively priced products of an ethical nature.

Firms which offer Halal insurance conform to a number of rules. For example, they are not permitted to invest in industries such as tobacco and alcohol and their business model is based on mutual cooperation.

As such, Muslims can buy cover from them and go through the claims handling process without contravening their faith.

Regulated by the Financial Services Authority, Salaam Halal insurance describes itself as the UK's first cover provider dedicated to providing products for the British Muslim community.
